Frequently asked questions
Playing Questner
What is Questner?
Questner is an AI-powered text adventure platform where you can play interactive stories or create your own campaigns.
Think of it like an AI Game Master that reacts to your choices in real time. Instead of choosing from fixed dialogue options, you can type naturally and the AI continues the story based on what you do.
You can play fantasy adventures, horror stories, detective mysteries, survival campaigns, cultivation worlds, sci-fi stories, cozy slice-of-life campaigns, sandbox RPGs, and much more.
Questner is built for solo players who want the feeling of stepping into a story and shaping what happens next.
Is Questner only for D&D?
No. Questner supports D&D-style fantasy campaigns, but it is not only a D&D platform.
You can play many different types of AI adventures, including fantasy, horror, isekai, cultivation, sci-fi, mystery, survival, cozy fantasy, tycoon-style stories, and original custom campaigns.
Some campaigns feel more like a tabletop RPG, while others are more narrative, character-driven, or story-first.
Is Questner only available in English?
Questner is currently only officially available in English.
At the moment, we cannot fully support additional interface languages due to the AI models being primarily optimized for English, as well as the limitations of a small development team.
That said, some players have successfully played Questner in other languages by interacting with the AI in that language. Results can vary depending on the language and campaign style, but you are welcome to try it.
If you play Questner in another language and have feedback about the experience, we would love to hear it through Discord or support.
Is there a mobile app?
Not yet. Questner currently works directly in your browser on desktop and mobile devices.
You can also add Questner to your phone's home screen for a more app-like experience while playing on mobile.
Pricing and messages
Is Questner free?
Questner is not a fully free platform, but it does include a free trial experience so you can test it before subscribing.
New players get 40 free messages to explore campaigns and try the gameplay. After that, you can start a 7-day free trial to continue your adventure.
Once the trial ends, Questner currently costs $9.99 or €8.99 per month and includes 3,000 messages per month. There is also an annual plan at $99.99 or €89.99 per year, which includes 36,000 messages for the year.
Messages are used when you interact with the AI during gameplay. This limit helps us keep Questner sustainable while still giving most players enough messages for long adventures.
Is there an annual plan?
Yes. Alongside the monthly plan, you can subscribe annually for $99.99 or €89.99 per year, which includes 36,000 messages for the year.
The annual plan works out cheaper per message than paying monthly, and the full allowance is available from the start of the year rather than being released month by month.
You can choose the plan when you subscribe, and switch between monthly and annual later from your profile.
Why does Questner have message limits?
Questner uses advanced AI models to generate stories in real time. Every message has a real AI processing cost, especially in long campaigns with memory, context, choices, and ongoing story details.
We used to offer unlimited messages, but as the platform grew, unlimited usage at this price became difficult to support.
The current monthly plan includes 3,000 messages, which should cover normal gameplay for most players. For players who play a lot more, extra message top-ups are available.
What happens if I run out of monthly messages?
If you use all your monthly messages before your next billing cycle, you can buy a message top-up to keep playing.
Two sizes are available:
- 3,000 messages for $9.99
- 36,000 messages for $99.99
Top-ups are one-time purchases and require an active subscription. They are separate from your monthly messages and are only used after those run out, so your subscription messages are always spent first.
Do top-up messages expire?
Top-up messages roll over and can be used later, but they are not meant to last forever. Currently, top-up messages can roll over for up to 12 months.
Monthly subscription messages refresh each billing cycle. They do not stack forever like top-ups.
Why do I have to pay for a subscription and also pay for messages?
The subscription gives you access to Questner and includes 3,000 monthly messages.
Top-ups are optional. You only need them if you use all of your monthly messages before your next renewal, and they come in 3,000-message ($9.99) and 36,000-message ($99.99) packs.
We know some players play much more than average, so top-ups are there for heavy users who want to continue playing without waiting for the monthly message reset.
Creating campaigns
Can I create my own campaigns?
Yes. Questner allows players to create their own campaigns, worlds, characters, rules, and story settings.
Many players create completely original adventures. Others build campaigns inspired by fantasy novels, tabletop RPGs, horror games, anime, survival stories, cultivation worlds, historical settings, or their own custom ideas.
For best results, keep your campaign instructions clear and not too long. If something is very important, make it direct and specific. For example:
- "NEVER generate multiple player actions in a row."
- "Always wait for the player before continuing the story."
- "Do not decide what the player character says or does."
Can I upload images to campaigns?
Yes, image uploads are available for stories you create.
At the moment, image uploads are mainly part of the campaign creation flow, so you may not see the upload option inside every ready-made campaign.
How can I make the AI follow my campaign rules better?
The best campaign instructions are clear, simple, and direct.
Try to avoid very long rule lists unless they are truly needed. The more complicated the instructions are, the harder it can be for the AI to follow everything perfectly.
Good instructions usually include:
- What role the player has
- What the world is like
- What the main goal is
- What tone the story should have
- What the AI should never do
- How fast the story should move
For important rules, use very direct wording. For example:
- "NEVER control the player character."
- "Always wait for the player's next message."
- "Do not skip major scenes."
- "Do not reveal secrets too early."
You can also ask our Discord community for tips. Many creators share prompt examples, campaign-building advice, and gameplay fixes there.
How the AI behaves
Why does the AI sometimes forget details or become inconsistent?
Questner stories are generated in real time by AI. Because the stories are open-ended, the AI can sometimes forget details, repeat names, misunderstand rules, rush ahead, or become inconsistent in longer campaigns.
This is one of the biggest areas we are actively improving. We are working on better memory, pacing, campaign structure, and tools that help creators guide the AI more reliably.
You can also help the AI during gameplay by correcting it naturally.
Why does the AI sometimes continue the story without waiting for me?
Sometimes the AI may move too fast, ask and answer its own questions, or decide what your character does before you respond.
We know this can be frustrating, and we have been working on fixes for this.
If you create your own campaign, you can add a clear instruction such as: "Only generate one response per player message. Never continue the story multiple steps ahead. Always wait for the player's next action."
You can also open the game panel and check Limit AI to one response message under Settings.
Account and billing
Can I cancel my subscription anytime?
Yes. You can cancel your subscription anytime through the Questner website.
To cancel your subscription:
- Open the sidebar menu and click your name at the bottom
- On your profile, use Manage plan in the Account section
- Cancel your subscription there
Once cancelled, your subscription will usually remain active until the current billing period ends. You will not lose access immediately after cancelling.
If you experience any issues with cancelling your subscription, contact us at contact@questner.ai.
My subscription or payment looks wrong. What should I do?
Please contact support at contact@questner.ai and include the email address connected to your Questner account.
In some cases, users accidentally subscribe using a different email address than the one they normally log in with. This can make it look like the subscription is missing, even though the payment is connected to another account.
If your payment is pending, it may be waiting for your bank or payment provider to approve it. In that case, the payment may be retried automatically.
If you think you were charged incorrectly, please contact us and we will check your account.
Do you offer refunds?
Refund requests are reviewed case by case.
If you believe you were charged by mistake, cancelled before renewal, used the wrong account, or had another billing issue, contact us at contact@questner.ai with the email connected to your Questner account and any relevant payment details.
We will review the situation and help where possible. See our refund policy for the full terms.
